Ohey Multi-Sports Centre

Smart LED floodlights adapt the light to the needs of each sport and reduce energy consumption by 54%

The Ohey multi-sports centre in the province of Namur is home to various sports clubs and disciplines. It can also be hired for private events. Given the success of the teams, especially the volleyball team, it is important to be able to adapt the light levels to the required standards when a club moves up a category.

When the roof of the sports centre was renovated, the local authorities decided to upgrade the lighting in the main sports hall. The objectives of the new sports lighting were to:

  • reduce energy consumption;
  • ensure that the court was suitable for volleyball competitions;
  • comply with the lighting standards for the various sports for which competitions are held;
  • easily adapt the lighting to the needs of the different sports.

LED sports lighting for a variety of sports

A multi-sports hall is used for a wide range of sports but each sport and each level of competition has its own criteria and standards to meet when it comes to lighting. For example, basketball at Belgian national level requires 800 lux, indoor football 500 lux and volleyball 400 lux.

The local authorities asked us to assess the existing situation, including the dimensions and positioning of the luminaires, and to draw up a detailed lighting design that would meet all their criteria. To guarantee maximum versatility for all sporting activities, they required the lighting to meet the following basic criteria:

  • average illuminance: 800 lux;
  • 70% Emin/Eave uniformity;
  • 0.9 FM maintenance factor.

Efficient, long-lasting LED floodlights

To achieve these objectives, we proposed lighting the sports hall with 28 INDU BAY floodlights and 4 OMNISTAR KIT floodlights.

The INDU BAY LED floodlight is an economical, high performance solution that provides high light output without dazzling players or spectators. With high energy efficiency, low glare and a high-quality light that provide excellent visibility, INDU BAY offers optimal playing conditions. It offers a range of light distributions and intensities to provide exactly the right amount of light where it's needed.

To ensure perfect uniformity, even in the corners, and avoid shadows, we provided 4 OMNISTAR KITs. These LED floodlights have been designed to offer unrivalled photometric performance for lighting spaces that require high light output while offering all the benefits of a cost-effective LED solution: low energy consumption, limited maintenance and rapid return on investment.

The new sports lighting ensures an average illuminance of 867 lux and 70% uniformity when the entire court is used for futsal. When volleyball competitions are being held, the floodlights provide an average illuminance of 837 lux and 94% uniformity.

54% energy savings

In addition to their excellent photometric performance, the LED floodlights met the sports centre's management’s other objectives with low energy consumption and virtually zero maintenance. By replacing the old discharge lamps, which had become increasingly difficult to maintain due to a shortage of spare parts, energy consumption has been reduced by 54%.

A smart vision for sports facility management

The high lighting levels are not always needed. During training sessions, for example, a lower lighting level provides optimal conditions. In addition, different sports have different lighting requirements. The managers wanted a control system that would make it easy to adjust the lighting according to real needs.

We proposed our Schréder ITERRA Gateway wireless management system. Using a remote control or an app on a mobile phone or tablet, this system makes it possible to adapt the light levels to the sport being played, thus optimising energy savings.

The app enables managers to create their own:

  • lighting scenarios based on the events taking place in the sports hall;
  • automations, such as automatically switching off the lights at 1 am;
  • a scenario that adjusts the light level according to the natural daylight outside.

The Schréder ITERRA Gateway enables managers to manage and adjust the lighting in real time from anywhere via an Internet connection, ensuring, among other things, that the floodlights are  switched off when the hall is not in use. A total of 5 control boxes manage the floodlights via DALI, each controlling 5 to 6 floodlights.

The sports hall is now perfectly equipped to host high level sporting events while minimising energy consumption.

We're delighted to have helped the Ohey multi-sports centre upgrade its lighting. From the initial measurements to the photometric studies carried out by our design office, we proposed the lighting solution best suited to their needs. Our team then commissioned the management system and trained the customer to create lighting scenarios independently.
